Urban Legend Stories

When I think of urban legend stories I think of them as spooky, ludicrous, but creative alternatives to our sometimes mundane reality.

Some stories are 100% real, of course, but many legends are so filled with exaggerations, misconceptions, and imagination that it only reflects shadows of the truth. But children and adults enjoy listening and passing them on nonetheless!

And why is that?...

2 Good Reasons

Firstly, most legends appear to be possible. Bizarre things happen all the time, we see them on the news and in real person.

I remember when I first heard about crocodile (mutant?) living in our sewers. I believed it when I was young and only found out years later that it wasn't true!

Secondly, urban legends are entertaining to listen to so much that we want to believe them. Tell me which one you want to hear more of: a rat population living in the sewers? OR a mutant crocodile population living in the sewers? Shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (turtle power!) illustrate my point. Strange possibilities provide a colorful alternative world that entertains children and adults.

Your Task: Create your own Urban Legend

For your writing exercise, create an urban legend and see if you can fool anyone (don't really try to fool them of course).

I wish you success!
