School Story Starters

A week ago, Mrs. Forkets announced a school wide space invention contest. Naturally, Phoebe, Rae Rae, Annie, and Bonnie teamed up excitedly for the contest. As they walked to the sign up sheet that day to enter their group, Maya, Queen, and Gracelyn, their evil enemies, pushed their way in front and signed up first.

As usual Mrs. Forkets didn't see. Rae Rae glared at them as they laughed mockingly exiting the classroom. "Like they'd think of anything good!" Bonnie said loudly. Yet their team worked hard for the whole week, thinking of ideas and plans. Even though the prize is a trip to a small nearby theme park on a school day, they seemed eager to win just for the sake of beating the other team.

As the bell for recess rang, Phoebe found Annie, Rae Rae, and Bonnie huddled in the yard at their meeting place. All of them talked busily to each other and were holding pieces of wood and wire together. What were they planning? Phoebe thought. She was just about to tap Bonnie’s shoulder when...
