Homemade Gifts to Make

The hippest homemade gifts to make for hippest people in your life.

A documentary for a person is a gift like no other. This is a gift that requires a lot of work and help but will definitely shock the ones receiving them...in a good way. ;)

For this project, you will need to work with a team to create a documentary about a person you all know so that everyone gets input too. First you will need to do a lot of planning, get the materials, and people ready. Then you will spend time filming. Lastly you will have to edit and sound mix to create the final copy.

Are you ready for a challenge?

Materials

You will need these materials to work on your project.  Have your team reach out and get the stuff you need. Make sure that you have them before you move on.
  • digital camera
  • computer
  • digital editor with sound manipulating abilities
  • blank DVDs (and maybe DVD covers and casings)
Note: Try finding local film students to help you out, they're probably super cheap or won't charge anything at all. My film team and I once found a nice lady to act for our short for free. We found her on craigslist.org.

You can also read my Amateur Movie Making page which goes a bit more detailed on the filmmaking process.

Pre-Production - Plan It

  1. Decide the focus of your documentary. Will it be about what type of person he/she is? Or how has this person changed you?...
  2. Decide who will be responsible for what: camera operator, the person who sets up the schedules, editors,...mostly your team will have to double up on job and do everything collectively.
  3. Create a list of people you will interview or appear on the film. Set the schedule of when each person will be avaliable for the interview. Leave lots of time in case anything goes wrong and requires a reshoot.

Production - Shoot It

  1. Follow your schedule and start filming.
  2. If you find yourself off schedule, adjust but generally try to make deadlines.
  3. Keep good and clear records of each shot so that you can use it later in the editing process.
  4. After each day's work, transfer the digital material into the computer editor and see if everything worked correctly.

Post-Production - Assemble It

  1. After you tranfer it, start cutting and putting the pieces together.
  2. Let it sit for a while.
  3. And then watch it over with everyone involved. If it runs seamlessly, you've done a great job. If not, fix the parts that doesn't feel right.
  4. When everyone has seen it and is happy with it, burn the film on DVDs. Everyone should get copies.

Debut

Set up a party, have a good time, and give your special friend a good surprise he/she won't forget in a long time. This is one of the coolest homemade gifts to make, no doubt!
