Alice in Wonderland

Recreate Lewis Carroll's classic story, Alice in Wonderland.

My first encounter with Alice is the Disney movie version of the story. Only later did I discover that it all started from a storybook written by Lewis Carroll. You can read or listen to the original for free here:

Alice in Wonderland Storybook Quotes

  • ALICE: “and what is the use of a book,” thought Alice “without pictures or conversation?
  • ALICE: “I wonder if I shall fall right THROUGH the Earth! How funny it’ll seem to come out among the people that walk with their heads downward!”
  • ALICE: “Dinah my dear! I wish you were down here with me!”
  • ALICE: “Curiouser and curiouser!”
  • ALICE: “How doth the little crocodile/Improve his shining tail!”
  • WHITE RABBIT: “Why, Mary Ann, what ARE you doing out here?”
  • CATERPILLAR: “Keep your temper”
  • CATERPILLAR: “It is a very good height indeed!”
  • CHESIRE CAT: “We’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”
  • MAD HATTER: “Why is a raven like a writing-desk?”
  • QUEEN: “Off with his head!”

Suggestion

All the characters in Alice in Wonderland have a strong personality and each seems to have many features to write about. My very favorite characters are the Caterpillar and the Cheshire Cat. Try to write a story about your favorite character that makes them the main character instead.

Or try adding mini stories. Alice meets different characters each time she ventures onto a new place. Cut into a story and try making your own mini story. See how closely (and nonsense) your story becomes compared to the master’s, Lewis Carroll’s!
